CONDITIONS & SYMPTOMS

Explore the common reasons you might need to see a gastroenterologist

There can be a wide variety of symptoms and problems affecting your digestive system and it’s important to get the right treatment for your condition. Delaying your treatment can make your condition worse and affect your quality of life.

When we swallow food, our stomachs begin to move and produce acid to digest it. Normally, a valve at the top of the stomach prevents the acid from rising up through the oesophagus and into the mouth. However, this does not always happen, and acid escapes the stomach and comes up — this process is called acid reflux.

An allergic reaction is the result of an immune response to a specific substance. This reaction can be relatively slow and mild, or it can be intense and acute as the body’s immune system over-produces histamine and other chemicals. These more severe cases may result in life-threatening anaphylaxis, or inability to breathe.

Gastrointestinal cancer is an umbrella term that includes oesophageal, gastric, colorectal, pancreatic, and liver cancers. All of these illnesses start when the cells in the lining of the GI tract mutate and grow into tumours, possibly spreading to lymph nodes and other organs.

Difficulty swallowing, or dysphagia, is a condition that occurs primarily in older people and children, but it can certainly affect people of all ages. It’s caused by many different factors, such as neuromuscular problems or obstructions within the oesophagus.

Bloating is that feeling when the stomach feels swollen or tight. It is most commonly caused by gas. When we eat food that is difficult to break down, it sometimes remains in our bowels and begins to ferment, causing gas to accumulate.
